Amsterdam-based, silver-blonde songstress Nina June creates cinematic pop songs that tell tales of the complex forms of human connections. Sensual fables about the paradoxes of intimacy and independence. With her sultry alto voice, she elegantly combines electronic sound design with acoustic elements. With its own distinctive sound that she describes as “melancholic nostalgia”, her music parallels that of artists like Ane Brun, Air and The Paper Kites.
Born and raised in Castricum, a small village near the sea, Nina grew up with parents who had diverse musical tastes. Her mother listened to the evocative songs of iconic female singer-songwriters such as Tracy Chapman, Eva Cassidy and Annie Lennox, while her dad preferred groups like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with their classic songwriting and vocal harmonies. At the age of 17, Nina left her hometown to study music at the acclaimed Rockacademy.
Her first single “For Love” started a musical odyssey that would evolve into an album called “Bon Voyage”. In search of inspiration Nina walked the Camino Santiago, a 1000 km journey from the French Pyrenees to the Spanish ocean. “Bon Voyage” is a greeting to everyone in search of love, freedom and a personal mission. It’s a salute to those who face feelings of failure and loneliness in a world that has never seemed so connected.”
“Bon Voyage”, a record she created and released independently on her own label and presented in a sold-out Paradiso, gained an impressive streaming count on Spotify. Songs from the album were used for TV shows and movie soundtracks worldwide, and in June 2018 Nina was invited to play a showcase at New York Indie Week. In September 2018 she received the Zilveren Notekraker, a coveted prize presented to upcoming artists for the most impressive artistic achievement of the previous year.
Nina teamed up with musician, composer and producer Lywe, who she discovered on social media in a video where he was performing one of his own compositions. “It was so beautiful and authentic, it caught me right away. We both like to tell stories, to solve and shape puzzles into little pieces of beauty.” This creative synergy led them to creating the album and even a new series of songs which they also co-produced.
At the beginning of 2019 Nina joined the impressive roster of renowned Canadian label Nettwerk which represents artists such as Angus & Julia Stone, The Paper Kites and Passenger. After a run of summer dates with musician-producer SYML and fall dates with labelmates The Franklin Electric, Nettwerk released Nina’s new EP “Shadows & Riddles” on November 1st. Nina is currently working on new music to be released in the new year.
